For the first time since 1986 - Canada beat Jamaica and qualify for the World Cup

The Canadian men's national team under head coach John Herdman have written history and qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It will be Canada's first World Cup participation since Mexico 1986. Needing just one point from the game against Jamaica on Sunday, the CanMNT delivered a dominant performance in front of 30,000 fans at BMO Field to beat Jamaica 4-0 thanks to goals by Cyle Larin (13') and Tajon Buchanan (44'), Junior Hoilett (83') and an own goal by Adrian Mariappa (88'). 

Coming off a loss against Costa Rica, Canada left no doubt that they wanted to wrap up qualification at home. It took just 13 minutes for Larin to open the scoring after a brilliant pass by Stephen Eustaquio. Canada knew a draw was enough but kept attacking and had the majority of possession and countless chances until finally, just before halftime Buchanan doubled the score with an easy tap in after a set-piece. 

Two goals up at halftime, Canada should have gone up 3-0, but Buchanan failed to capitalize from a Larin pass, and then Jonathan David missed the open net moments later. It was Canada's biggest chance until Hoilett added a third with a clinical finish from inside the box. Then with just moments to go, Mariappa beat his goalkeeper to add to Canada's goal tally. On Wednesday, one point against Panama will be enough for Canada to secure first place in Concacaf qualifying.
