Bayern Munich market values: €5m rise for Sane, Bayern squad now worth twice Dortmund's
Bayern Munich are unquestionably in the middle of a tricky transition season with a relatively new head coach in Thomas Tuchel, as well as a new sporting director in Christoph Freund. That, among other things, has led to the squad at the Allianz Arena looking a little less dominant than is usually expected of the Munich side, which is undoubtedly reflected in the fact that Bayern sit second in the Bundesliga table, four points behind Bayer Leverkusen. This troubling start to the season was also showcased in the latest Transfermarkt market value update of the Bundesliga, which saw a number of Tuchel’s key players get notable upgrades and even more get worrying downgrades.
The biggest Bayern increases in market value
Leroy Sane: While Tuchel has had to contend with an attacking line short on form and options, there’s no doubt that the 50-year-old tactician has been able to rely heavily on the talents of German international Leroy Sané. The 27-year-old attacker has already bagged eight goals and seven assists in 13 league games to date and aside from Harry Kane has perhaps been Bayern’s best player this season. As such, his market value has risen by €5 million to €80m.
Noussair Mazraoui: After a bright start to life in Germany last season, Noussair Mazraoui’s impressive form was cut short by injury during the 2022 World Cup which saw the player miss eight league games and his spot in the starting XI. However, the Morocco international has worked hard under Tuchel this season and has elbowed his way back into the Bayern head coach’s first team plans. As such, the 26-year-old talent has seen his market value rise by €2m to a career high of €30m.
Aleksandar Pavlovic: Bayern aren’t exactly famous for offering first team opportunities to young players from their academy, so the fact that 19-year-old talent Aleksandar Pavlovic has worked his way into the first team this season is no small feat. Preferred in a defensive midfield position, the Munich-born talent has at times plugged a gaping hole in Tuchel’s team and as such has seen his market value rise to €2m.
The biggest Bayern decreases in market value
Serge Gnabry: Considered one of the most useful squad players at Bayern for a number of seasons, Serge Gnabry has perhaps dropped down a tier or two in Tuchel’s preferences in no small part due to the emergence of Sané and a forearm injury that has ruled the German international out for much of the season to date. As such, Gnabry has played only 228 minutes of league football and doesn’t look likely to be starting for the club anytime soon.
Matthijs de Ligt: Signed last summer from Juventus for a sizable sum of €67m, Matthijs de Ligt was supposed to be the answer to Bayern’s defensive problems. Instead, the Dutch international has become one of the club’s most expensive liabilities. The defender has already picked up a number of injuries over the course of the last 12 months and missed no less than six league games in this campaign alone through injury. As such, a €5m devaluation highlights how unreliable the 26-year-old talent has become in Munich.
Leon Goretzka: Once one half of an unstoppable midfield partnership that won Bayern the Champions League, Leon Goretzka is now a shadow of the towering figure he once was in Munich. Two goals and one assist in 11 league games is far from terrible, but it points to a player that is more willing to be a member of the supporting cast rather than a bona fide winner and as such the German international has seen his market value drop by €5m.
Thomas Müller: One goal and four assists in 11 league games isn’t terribly bad for a player that has only played 353 minutes of Bundesliga football this season, but it also clearly suggests that Tuchel has taken the brave move to bench the 34-year-old talent more often than not for younger options in his squad. The German international’s market value has now dropped by €2m to €10m as a result.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting: Although many Bayern fans will be eternally grateful to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting for the manner in which he covered for the departure of Robert Lewandowski last season, the 34-year-old striker has now been well and truly resigned to the bench following the arrival of Kane.
Daniel Peretz: Signed in the summer transfer window as Bayern were desperately rushing to find cover for their goalkeeping position, Daniel Peretz has found himself to be surplus to requirement in Munich this season. To date the shot-stopper has played just 90 minutes of football for the club this season and is unlikely to feature much before he inevitably moves on at the end of the season.
Bayern fall from €1b mark, squad now worth twice Dortmund’s
Following the most recent market value update, Bayern’s overall squad value has dropped by no less than €16.2m to €932m. The Bundesliga giants have been flirting with the €1b mark for some time now, but have now moved slightly further away from the exclusive club that only four clubs across European football can lay claim to. Fortunately for the Munich side, their minor decrease doesn’t change their standing in European football and keep them in sixth place among Europe’s most valuable clubs, ahead of Manchester United and €67m below Chelsea. However, these figures are likely to change dramatically following the Premier League market value update in the coming weeks.
Despite the minor downgrade, Bayern can still lay claim to the most valuable squad in German football by a considerable distance. With a squad value of €932m, the Munich side are worth €369m more than second-placed Leverkusen and more than twice the value of Borussia Dortmund’s squad, which is now valued at €439.4m. As such, fans will be expecting Tuchel to make the most of what is clearly the most talented squad in Germany and win this season’s Bundesliga title.
